Science, the flagship journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has completed its inaugural Data Stories video contest and we’re excited to share the winners with you!

Researchers submitted 90-second videos portraying incredible visual stories based on scientific data. Three expert judges evaluated the submissions based on their creativity, complexity, and clarity. Winners fell into three categories, Corporate, Professional, and Student.

Here are the winning visualization videos from Data Stories 2016:

Corporate Winner: Daniel Gallagher with NASA

“Martian Atmosphere Loss Explained by NASA”

NASA makes great data visualizations and this video is no exception. NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio uses excellent 3D imagery, visuals, data, and narration to explain how Mars’ atmosphere has changed over time. This submission was also selected as the People’s Choice winner.

Professional Winner: RJ Andrews

“Are Gazelles Endangered?”

The Endangered Safari project, from Info We Trust, contains all of the large African mammals along with juicy info like animal size, family, population trend, range, and IUCN threatened species status. The video is clean and powerful, using pictograms and color.

Student Winner: Ulf Aslak Jensen

“How People Gather: An Interactive Visualization Approach”

Ulf Aslak Jensen, a masters student at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), created this fun video describing social interactions. Science honored this submission because it’s an engaging merger of video and motion graphics. Check it out!
