A study from Oxford University’s business school found that the Rio 2016 games will cost $4.6 billion, or an overrun of 51 percent for a country that is facing a second year of economic struggle.

The study, published in July, shows that when a city decides to organize the Olympic Games, they are essentially taking on one of the most costly and financially risky mega-projects that exists. They discovered that the average actual out-turn cost for Summer Games is USD 5.2 billion (2015 level), and USD 3.1 billion for Winter Games.
