The original Land Rover, a British-made all-terrain vehicle that earned a reputation for its use in exotic places, debuted at an auto show in Amsterdam on April 30, 1948. It was soon to become one of the most iconic cars in auto industry history.

The design for the original Land Rover  – arguably inspired by the Jeep  – was started in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, chief designer at the Rover Company. He worked with his brother Spencer, the managing director at the time, on his farm in Wales.

The prototype, later named Land Rover Series I, was built on a Jeep chassis and axles. The early choice of color was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so these vehicles only came in various shades of light green.
