How to Create a Tree Map Chart

Treemaps are a great choice of chart type if you want to visualize the components of a process, organization, product which consists of a lot of elements where a piechart would be unreadable. You may have seen great examples, like Dave Maccandless’ Billion-dollar-graph. Or the one below? We’ll show you how you can simply create a tree map by yourself using infogr.am

1. Go to infogr.am

2. Let’s say we want to make a chart representing the areas of all European Union countries. As there are currently 27 of those, a piechart of 27 segments would look like a mess - too many colours, too many small segments. Meanwhile a treemap with the same data can tell the story with ease.

To create a treemap like this, you can click on “New Chart” on your infogr.am profile, select Treemap in the chart type selection tool and enter your data in the spreadsheet.

3. Data input is a simple spreadsheet, each sheet can represent one data set if you choose to make several. When published you’ll be able to switch among data sets using radio buttons.

4. You can now embed your new Tree Map chart in any web site, blog post or share with your friends on social networks.

Yesterday morning the 200 000th infographic made with infogr.am

Online charts are now easy with infogr.am :

We just updated our Charts site. Look how many amazingly beautiful charts you can now create with infogr.am All of them are combinable in cool, animated infographics as you may expect. Everything from a simple bar chart to treemaps, word clouds, stream graphs and gauge. Fine-tuned for data journalism needs.

A faster, better infogr.am in the cloud.

We promised last week that we’ll look for a better hosting. And landed on one of most advanced cloud services out there - AWS. This means, infogr.am is now much faster. And with a nearly 100% uptime guarantee (99.5% to be precise according to our AWS contract).

Hey there! We got 2 invitations for you to go to Arctic15 in Helsinki - the largest tech conference in Northern Europe that has chosen infogr.am as “Best new start-up of 2012”.

Tickets were given to us by the good people at Arctic15 and we just want to give them away to you. As we just have 2 tickets, we have to select you somehow. So here’s the deal.

If you want a free ticket here’s what you have to do:

2. Tweet us @infogram why you’d like to go to Arctic15 (we’re not asking you to spam or RT anything. But please make sure to follow us for time being so we can contact you via DM)

You have most likely noticed shortage of our service over last 2 days.

Our web hosting service has had days and days of problems that lead to new unimaginable problems with data storage. Our backup plans even failed. We are currently doing everything we can to solve these problems.

This should never happen to you so we have scheduled moving infogr.am to Amazon Web Services by the end of next week. AWS will be much more reliable and stable. You should also notice increase of overall loading and response speed of our application. Meanwhile we’re doing our best to assure our service is up and running as soon as possible.
